The Study began in 1966 when local general practitioner Dr Kevin Cullen, together with his colleagues, launched a pioneering community health survey at a time when large‑scale population studies were virtually unheard of internationally – particularly in regional Australia. With no formal home, the Study operated initially from a small fleet of caravans on the old Busselton Hospital site on Marine Terrace, and later from a series of makeshift and borrowed spaces across the region. Despite these limitations, Dr Cullen and a dedicated group of local volunteers embarked on an ambitious venture that would persist through decades of change, ongoing funding uncertainty and logistical challenges, ultimately growing into one of the most renowned population and medical health research programs in the world.

Data collected through successive community surveys has underpinned research that transformed international understanding of chronic disease, influencing prevention, diagnosis and management practices globally. Today, the Study continues to evolve. By integrating modern technologies and approaches in precision medicine, the Busselton Population Medical Research Institute (BPMRI) is recognised as a leading contributor to global population health and chronic disease research – a testament to what can be achieved through community commitment, scientific vision and resilience without walls.
