Dr Jennie Hui

Dr Hui is a molecular geneticist whose primary training was in the field of Immunogenetics. Over the last 15 years, her main research focus involved the study of genetics and epidemiology of human diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases and diabetes. She has been associated with the Busselton Health Study since 2002 when she took up her first post-doctoral position, working on the genetics of asthma with Professor Bill Cookson from the University of Oxford. Dr Hui’s early genetics work explored the Major Histocompatibility Complex in relation to asthma and allergy. She returns to Perth in late 2006 after completing her second post-doctoral fellowship with Professor Inoko in Tokai University, Japan.
She took up her current appointment as the Director of the Busselton Health Study Laboratory in 2013 where she oversees the genetic and biospecimen data bank for the Busselton Health Study. Dr Hui is a member of the Busselton Population Medical Research Institute (BPMRI) Development Committee, a member of the BPMRI Research Committee and a co-opted member of the BPMRI Board. She also holds full time appointment as Senior Medical Scientist at the PathWest Laboratory Medicine of Western Australia, with adjunct appointment at the School of Population and Global Health at the University of Western Australia.
Dr Hui has initiated and maintained a number of internationally recognized research projects and genetic consortia representing the Busselton Health Study. She has published over 100 articles covering subjects including obesity, respiratory, thyroid, cardiovascular and skin diseases, endocrinology, ageing and genetic epidemiology. In 2011, 2012, 2016 and 2017 she was recognised by the University of Western Australia as an author of highly cited papers.
