Research Assistants

About the Role:

  • Appointees will be multi-skilled team players conducting a range of clinical and medical research tests at the BPMRI’s Busselton Health Study Centre located at 18 West Street, Busselton, Western Australia. The Busselton Health Study is a large cohort study of adults living in the City of Busselton and is collecting detailed health measures for research into chronic diseases of aging and the health impacts of COVID-19 in the local community.
  • This position suits nursing or health science graduates with excellent interpersonal and technical skills and the ability to work effectively one-on-one with study participants and within a small and dedicated team.
  • A friendly and patient disposition and the ability to strictly adhere to study protocols are essential in this role. Full training in all techniques will be provided.
  • Ability to work full-time preferred but part-time (0.5 FTE or 0.8 FTE) may be considered. Indicative rostered hours for participant testing span Mon – Fri 7 am to 4 pm (2 daily sessions) or 9 am to 2 pm (1 daily session).
  • This is a 2-year project with opportunity for extension subject to future research grant funding.

 Duties include:

  1. Collecting medical research data by administering a range of clinical tests according to standard study protocols and a fixed participant schedule (Daily), these include:
  • Blood pressure measurements (automated) and 12 lead electrocardiograms (ECG).
  • Phlebotomy and handling of biological specimens (blood, urine).
  • DEXA scanning and body measurements (height, weight, waist, hip).
  • Lung function (spirometry) and skin allergy testing.
  • Ear and hearing tests (audiometry).
  • Eye and vision tests (OCT-scanning/imaging).
  • Physical function tests (grip-strength, mobility).
  • Cognitive testing (Computer-assisted and pen & paper – type).
  1. Maintaining accurate data entry and confidentiality of research records (Daily).
  2. Conducting participant interviews, administer questionnaires and check for completeness, assist with recruitment of study participants (Regularly).
  3. Maintaining clinical equipment and stocks (Regularly)
  4. Other duties to support BPMRI research, promotional, community engagement and administrative activities as directed (Occasionally).

Essential selection criteria:

  1. Bachelor of Nursing, allied health or equivalent in a health, science or related discipline preferably with previous experience in a patient-based environment.
  2. Excellent interpersonal and personal communication skills and the ability to work both one-on-one with older age clients and within a small team environment.
  3. Demonstrated familiarity with clinical techniques and willingness to learn and master new techniques.
  4. High level of competency in operating computers and software programs.
  5. Strong work ethic and demonstrated time-management skills. This position requires guiding participants through a structured study visit/protocol daily lasting up to 4 hours per session.

Desirable selection criteria:

  1. Good knowledge and familiarity of the City of Busselton community and Busselton Health Study program.
  2. Previous experience in research, clinical or not-for-profit settings.
